Off Leg is tossing the ball from the same side as your lead leg. Mimicking a shot often used to surprise a goalie shooting off stride. It requires an exceptional shoulder turn with a powerful open, instead of shut, hip turn. This toss also requires tremendous balance.
Med Ball Forward Scoop Toss / Off Leg: Catch / Step In
- The Primary Focus of a Catch during the Forward Scoop Toss Off Leg is to add additional components or variables to help the athlete work on coordination and body control through time and space. It also allows the player to practice the smooth transition from catch to shot.
- Stance: Stand in split stance position, inside leg forward, feet shoulder width apart, standing approximately 10ft away and facing the wall.
- Hand Placement: Upon catching the ball, place both hands behind and slightly to the side of the ball. Fingers pointing away with thumbs pointed up at address.
- Begin with a partner soft tossing the ball from your forward leg side at address
- Load Phase: Two things must happen at the same time during the load phase, ONE, is Take Away, TWO is Step In. Creating separation as you take one step forward. After the catch, rotate your shoulders 90° away from the wall around your forward (off) leg. Keeping your arms relatively straight, rotate the ball near our outside hip. During your Step-In, take a powerful step forward, leaning laterally over your lead foot. At the same time, your trail leg should extend laterally to help balance as you toss.
- Release: Have your hands follow the ball to the wall.
- Finish: Finish with hips and shoulders square to the wall in a very stable position. The more stable you are, the harder you will be able to toss the ball. Attempt to hold your finish for 2 sec. and repeat
- Effort: The MB Toss must be performed with 100% Effort. You cannot toss the MB hard enough
