MED BALL FORWARD SCOOP TOSS: CATCH / STEP IN

MED BALL FORWARD SCOOP TOSS

The Forward Scoop toss occurs facing the wall the entire time. The mechanics of the toss are very similar to a Lateral Scoop Toss accept instead to tossing across your body, you will toss in line with forward momentum. Shoulder and Hip Turn are very important here as are balance and managing your weight and center of gravity relative to rotation. This MB Toss will mimic the two hockey shots used most frequently, the snap and wrist shot.

Med Ball Forward Scoop Toss: Catch / Step In

  • The Primary Focus of a Catch during the Forward Scoop Toss is to add additional components or variables to help the athlete work on coordination and body control through time and space. It also allows the player to practice the smooth transition from catching to shooting the puck
  • First Review the description of the Forward Scoop Toss / Step In.
  • Have another person soft toss a ball to you from either side. In one fluid motion, catch the ball as you begin your step in. From there everything is the same.
  • Load Phase: Two things must happen at the same time during the load phase, ONE, is Take Away, TWO is Step In. During the Takeaway, rotate your shoulders 90° to the wall. Keeping your arms relatively straight. Raise the ball to approximately shoulder height. Your hip will open slightly. During your Step In. Take a powerful step forward. Your spacing should be the same as your split stance. Front shin angle should be vertical, rear leg straight. Your spine angle should match the angle of your rear leg.
  • Drive Phase: Once the front leg is firmly placed on the ground. Initiate the Toss with a powerful hip turn. Toss the ball as hard as you can driving your hands and onside shoulder towards the wall. Pull your lead shoulder back to accelerate your shoulder turn.
  • Release: Have your hands follow the ball to the wall.
  • Finish: Finish Tall, hips and shoulders square to the wall in a very stable position. The more stable you are, the harder you will throw. Hold your finish for 2 sec.
  • Effort: The MB Toss must be performed with 100% Effort. You cannot throw the MB hard enough
