SLIDE BOARD SPRINTS: W/ SPLIT STANCE PAUSE

SLIDE BOARD SPRINTS: W/ SPLIT STANCE PAUSE

SLIDE BOARD SPRINTS

Slide Board Sprints follow the same progression as linear sprints but in a more lateral movement pattern. Skating mechanics put an unusual amount of reliance on lateral force application. This lateral movement pattern and development of specific musculature is addressed by use of the slide board. This form of training is also low impact, which is an added benefit during the demands of seasonal play and training.

Sprints w/ Split Stance Pause

  • Sprint with a pause is a great way to introduce the slide board into training protocol
  • You will need preferably an adjustable Slide Board with 5’, 6’, 7’, 8’ lengths. Training width will depend on the athlete’s ability to hit pace protocols. Training booties are also suggested
  • Maintain a proper hockey posture the entire time. ½ squat depth, chest up, head up, with neutral spine.
  • I encourage you to use your arms in a slightly forward fashion, replicating a skating stride.
  • Work on attacking the slide board bumper, quickly approaching and changing direction after each complete travel of the board.
  • Sprints with pause require sprinting a number of travels followed by a 5 sec iso split stance held between each sprint interval.
