LATERAL BOUNDING / DISTANCE: PAUSE W/ ARM SWING
LATERAL BOUNDING
Due to the specific nature of the skating stride and mechanics, Lateral Bounding becomes a very important part of the training process because it helps reinforce biomechanical requirements to become a successful skater. Training an explosive lateral stride followed by a strong and stable landing onto the opposite leg are both key training components
LATERAL BOUNDING / DISTANCE
Lateral Bounds for Distance are part of our Lateral Bounding Series and are taught in a specific progression. Lateral Bounding for distance allows the athlete to focus on applying lateral power where distance is the main objective. Arm swing and shoulder turn are also incorporated to allow for proper balance. The ability to land correctly by loading the hip during deceleration will also be challenged. The lateral braking force is very similar to the movement required while skating.
Lateral Bound / Distance: Pause w/ Arm Swing
The Primary Focus will be on a Proper Hip Load and deceleration into the landing Phase
- Begin standing laterally to the intended path.
- Quickly breakdown into an athletic single leg stance on your trail leg
- Maintain good posture with your chest up and turned toward your loaded hip.
- Your back towards your intended path to bound
- Laterally bound as far as possible, landing quietly in the same load position on the opposite foot.
- Stick the landing, pause and repeat for number of reps prescribed
- Switch direction and repeat
- Attempt to cover as much distance as possible maintaining proper form with each attempt
- Utilize of a proper arm swing on athletic posture to a counterbalance your shoulder rotation and lateral forces generated by the legs. A better arm swing will also help you generate more torque and power while maintaining better balance.
